If you have an old HDD or SSD that may contain a Cardano wallet, you can sometimes recover access to your ADA. The key is to understand what wallet data actually is: seed phrases, private keys, encrypted wallet databases, and wallet configuration files. The Cardano blockchain itself is public and can be re-synced; the valuable recovery target is the wallet secret material.
Important: Only recover drives and data you own. Never share seed phrases, private keys, spending passwords, or wallet databases with anyone. Work from a copy, not the original drive.
1. Stop using the old drive immediately
Every write can overwrite deleted wallet files. Power it down, label it, and do not install software on it. If the drive is failing or making noise, seek professional data recovery first.
2. Create a forensic image or clone
Connect the drive through a write blocker if possible. Use ddrescue, dd, Clonezilla, Macrium Reflect, or a professional imaging tool to create a full disk image. Perform all searches and recovery on the image. Store the image on a separate, trusted drive.
3. Search for Cardano wallet artifacts
Cardano wallet data can appear in several forms.
Daedalus
Daedalus stores its state in a folder named after the network, usually Mainnet. Common locations:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%\\Daedalus\\Mainnet - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Daedalus/Mainnet

- Linux:
~/.local/share/Daedalus/mainnet
Look for:
wallet.db,state,wallets,secretssecret.key.sqlite,.db,.json,.keyfiles- folders named
Daedalus,Mainnet,cardano-wallet
If you find the full Daedalus state directory, copy it intact. The safest restoration path is to install the same major version of Daedalus on a clean computer and place the recovered state directory in the correct location. If a spending password is required, enter it when prompted. Do not attempt to edit or decrypt the database manually unless you are an expert.
Yoroi and browser wallets
Yoroi and other browser-based wallets may store data in browser profiles:
- Chrome/Edge:
Local Extension Settings,IndexedDB,Local Storage - Firefox:
storage/default,browser-extension-data - Brave: Chromium profile folders
Search for Yoroi, cardano, wallet, .ldb, .log, and LevelDB files. If you recover the whole browser profile, you may be able to restore the extension data by opening the same browser profile or importing the wallet if the extension offers it. You will usually still need the spending password.

Seed phrase backups
Many users wrote down or saved a 15-word, 24-word, or other valid Cardano seed phrase. Search text files, notes apps, password managers, PDFs, cloud backups, and images. A seed phrase is the most reliable recovery method. Restore it only in an official or reputable wallet such as Daedalus, Yoroi, Eternl, Flint, or Lace, and preferably on an offline or clean device.
4. Recover deleted wallet files
If files were deleted, use data recovery software on the disk image:
- PhotoRec
- Recuva
- R-Studio
- TestDisk
- Autopsy
- FTK Imager
Filter results by file type and name: .db, .sqlite, .json, .key, .txt, .ldb, .dat, and files containing cardano, daedalus, yoroi, or wallet. Recover them to a different drive. Rename copies, not originals.
5. Restore and verify safely
Install the official wallet software from the vendor's website. Update your operating system and scan for malware. Restore the wallet using the recovered seed phrase, wallet database, or browser profile. Allow the wallet to sync. Verify the balance. Before moving a large amount, send a small test transaction to a new wallet you control.

If you recover the wallet successfully, immediately create a new wallet with a new seed phrase and move your ADA there. This limits exposure if the old drive or backup was compromised.
6. What cannot be recovered from an old drive
- Blockchain data alone is not wallet data. If you only find
chainorimmutablefolders, you still need the wallet secrets. - A hardware wallet's private keys are not on the hard drive. Reconnect the hardware device and restore access with its PIN and recovery phrase.
- If the
secret.keyfile, wallet database, and seed phrase are all missing or corrupted, recovery may be impossible without professional help. Password cracking and database repair are specialized tasks.
7. Security checklist
- Work offline when handling seed phrases and private keys.
- Never upload wallet files, seed phrases, or screenshots to cloud services or AI tools.
- Keep multiple offline backups of your new seed phrase.
- Use a hardware wallet for significant holdings.
- Verify every wallet website and browser extension before entering secrets.
Final thoughts
Extracting Cardano wallet data from an old hard drive is a careful forensic and security process. The best outcome is usually finding a seed phrase or a complete Daedalus/Yoroi wallet directory. If you find it, restore it in a trusted wallet, verify the balance, and move funds to a newly secured wallet as soon as possible.
